Love, Daddy is a sweet children's book written by author Mike Ang as a dedication to his daughter Cali. With creative direction by Brian Sisco, Mike and I were able to develop a visual world to go with the adorable story he'd written for his little girl.
Mike and Brian gave me full creative control to develop the characters, style and color palette. We decided to use pandas to tell the story, as their black and white fur provides a bold visual statement, and they could be representative of any and all father/daughter pairs. After experimenting with everything from collage to markers to gouache, I honed in on a unique signature style featuring delicate but strong pen lines, along with expressive ink washes and patterned backgrounds. By keeping the line illustrations relatively flat, the pandas really popped against the textured ink environments they lived in. Below are some images that illustrate the creative process.
Below is a carousel of the finished artwork (minus the text, which was place organically by Brian).
Finally, here are some detail shots of the finished illustrations (all photographs by the lovely and talented Biz Jones).
Mike trusted me to bring a very near and dear project of his to life, and it was a wish come true to work with him and be able to fulfill not only his dream, but one of my own! If you're interested in supporting this project and purchasing the book, you can do so by clicking here.
